Architectural Design Thesis — 2023
Sir J.J. College of Architecture
This thesis focuses on the Pandharpur Wari, a historic pilgrimage in Maharashtra, where towns along the route face recurring challenges as they host thousands of pilgrims. The project aims to address these issues by integrating existing and proposed infrastructure with the temporary settlements that arise during the Wari.
The solutions proposed here are designed to create a sustainable and adaptable framework that can serve as a model for other towns facing similar challenges. This exploration emphasizes the importance of sensitive, context-driven design that aligns with the needs of both the pilgrims and the local communities.
The Pandharpur Wari is a 21-day pilgrimage procession from various parts of Maharashtra to Pandharpur, the abode of Lord Vitthal. The Wari culminates on Ashadi Ekadashi. If one has not been a part of the Pandharpur Wari before, nothing can prepare them for the sheer jolt to their senses as they approach and catch up with the pilgrimage procession.
Fig. 01 - The major section studies taken through the overall campus indicates that the hydrology and natural flow of rainwater does not cause any flooding in the proposed site area.
Fig. 02 - IDENTIFYING NODES AND LINKAGES -
The site is flanked in the east and northern edges by the civil engineering and architecture departments there exists organic paths created by movement of students through campus. The proposed design recognized these patterns and encourages these paths to move through the building as well as create new nodes and pathways.
